A ‘shoulder surfer’ is a criminal who will loiter in places where bank machines are located with the intention of watching you enter your PIN. This may be at a cashpoint (ATM) machine or in a retail premises where Chip and Pin machines are situated. Once they know your PIN they will then look to steal your bank card, often by using a distraction technique such as bumping into you or asking for directions. They normally work in teams of two or more and are very well organised. On occasions they have operated in the cashpoint machine areas inside the bank itself, standing behind the customer or pretending to use the machine next to you. ALWAYS COVER THE KEYPAD WHEN ENTERING YOUR PIN EVEN IF YOU ARE USING MACHINES INSIDE THE BANK
