There have been reports throughout the country of a fraudster cold-calling members of the public claiming that they must pay a debt or risk having the bailiffs sent around. The caller, who refers to himself as ‘Derek Jones’ and speaks with a Scottish accent, is purporting to be from a legitimate company called Jacobs (a traditional enforcement and debt recovery company based in Birkenhead). The fraudster claims that a debt is owed and informs the householder that they must appear in Court in the following two days. Interestingly the company do have an employee called Derek Jones but there is no suggestion that he is in any way responsible. The same name has been used in the past to scare people into paying fro advertising space which they have not agreed to. HM Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) have also received a high volume of calls from concerned members of the public wanting to know if they are expected to appear in Court. If you ever receive such a call report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk  IF YOU ARE EVER UNSURE IF A CALL IS GENUINE DON’T BE AFRAID TO PUT THE PHONE DOWN AND DON’T EVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL DETAILS
