Scam e-mails claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs are being sent to residents. The e-mail states that “you are eligible to receive a tax return, in order to receive your refund you need to create a Government Gateway account”. Anyone who responds to this type of e-mail risks allowing unlawful access to their bank account details. If you receive such an e-mail in these circumstances please don’r respond as requested but forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk then delete the e-mail. HMRC never contacts people due a tax refund via e-mail, they always send a letter addressed to the person by name rather than “Dear customer” which is a phrase used by fraudsters in these type of cases. PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE OPENING E-MAILS OF THIS NATURE AND, IF IN DOUBT, DELETE IT
