Fraudsters are sending out fake British Gas utility bill e-mails linked to a virus which can take over the recipient’s computer. Action Fraud have received hundreds of reports about the e-mails entitled ‘Your summer gas and electricity bill’ which contain a link to a website. The site instructs you to download a file to view your bill after which you will be locked out of your computer and directed to an online payment page. A variation of this scam e-mail has the subject line ‘New gas and electricity bill’ and the recipient’s full name. British Gas advise that their e-mails will always be personalised, will quote your British Gas account number and will only provide links to their official website at www.britishgas.co.uk  IF YOU SHOULD RECEIVE SUCH AN E-MAIL PLEASE DON’T CLICK ON ANY LINKS. IF YOU NEED TO CHECK GO DIRECTLY TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE
