Fraudsters are sending ‘scam’ e-mails claiming residents are eligible for a refund on their council tax. The e-mails, which are being sent from refund@direct.gov.uk offer a refund on your council tax and claim to be from local Government. They ask for confidential bank, credit card and passwords in order to process the refund. If you receive such an e-mail please don’t disclose any information whatsoever as this may enable fraudsters to access your finances. Please don’t respond to the e-mail, delete it and inform Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040. IF YOU WERE EVER ENTITLED TO A GENUINE REFUND YOU WOULD BE CONTACTED BY POST. LOCAL AUTHORITIES WILL NEVER ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA E-MAIL
